There are two types of skin aging:
Chronoaging, also known as intrinsic aging
Photoaging, also known as extrinsic aging
In chronoaging/intrinsic aging, after the age of 20, we start to lose 1-2% of our collagen per year. Photoaging/extrinsic aging can double this loss. This kind of aging happens naturally as it is linked to genetics – such as hormone levels and makeup of your cells and proteins.
Majority of photoaging/extrinsic aging is caused by UV exposure and damage. Additional factors that contribute to this type of aging are: expressions (repetitive facial movements and expressions), gravity (gravity constantly pulling body down and obviously is unavoidable), sleeping positions (sleeping the same way on either side can contribute to sleep line wrinkles), unhealthy lifestyle/habits such as smoking, and lastly pollution and environmental factors (smog, smoke, exhaustion believe it or not can all lead to extrinsic aging by attacking free radicals that break down otherwise healthy skin cells).
